President Mori meets President Xi in Nadi, Fiji

After attending the G20 meeting in Australia and visiting New Zealand, China’s President, His Excellency Xi Jinping, visited Nadi, Fiji from 21-23 November to meet with the eight leaders of the Pacific island countries that have diplomatic ties with China (Fiji, FSM, Samoa, PNG, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Tonga, Niue).  President Xi’s visit to Nadi is historic and indicates China’s increasing support and strong friendship with these eight Pacific island countries.  The visit was the first time for China at the Presidential level and was also the first meeting between President Xi and Pacific island leaders since taking up the Presidency in March 2013. more>>

President Emanuel Mori visited Japan on November 3rd to 9th 2014 to attend the 28th Anniversary of the FSM Independence Celebration and to receive a Honorary Doctorate Degree from Sophia University, a catholic university in Tokyo run by the Jesuits.  The President’s schedule in Tokyo also included an audience with His Majesty, the Emperor, and a working dinner with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The President also had lunch with the Chairman of Soft Bank, a company currently have investments in the FSM. Chairman Pete Christian of the FSM Congress ad some of President’s staff joined the President during his working dinner with Prime Minister Abe. The President also visited Nagoya, Kochi and Fukuoka to meet with the local government leaders, business community and members of their respective chambers of commerce, as well as welcoming the new FSM honorary consul general in Fukuoka, Mr. Wataru Aso. more>>

(Governor Ehsa and Micronesia Leaders Call for Swift Passage of National Shark Sanctuary)

On October 20, 2014, Pohnpei Governor John Ehsa, Chief of Staff Falcam on behalf of FSM President Emanuel Mori, and other state leaders attended a ceremony at Pohnpei International Airport unveiling a new welcome sign which celebrates the state’s shark protections.  With the passage of Chuuk’s law in May, all four states now fully protect sharks in their waters.  A draft bill is currently being reviewed by the FSM National Government which would create a shark sanctuary in FSM’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). more>>

On October 7, 2014, Kosrae State: The Honorable Alik L. Alik, Vice-President of the Federated States of Micronesia, represented the FSM National Government to the Ground-Breaking Ceremony of the Okat Bridge Project in Kosrae.

In his remark, Vice-President Alik was first conveyed the FSM’s heartfelt congratulations on the 65th Anniversary of the founding in 1949 of the People’s Republic of China. He stated that at 65th years of age, China of today is a vibrant nation that reflects its early promises with many achievements that contributed to significant strides in the economic and social well-being of its people.

He stated that the joint observance of this anniversary is an indicative of the importance our two countries attach to the special event and the strong friendship existing between the FSM and China. The Vice-President also highlighted in his remark, the genesis of the establishment of diplomatic relations through a signing of the joint communiqué between the FSM and China twenty-five years ago and which it remains strong and cooperative.  more>>

In the morning of October 16, 2014, His Excellency Ambassador Ahmet Bulent Meric of Turkey presented his Letter of Credence to President Emanuel Mori officially accrediting him as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey to the Federated States of Microesia, with residence in Tokyo, Japan.
At the outset, the President welcomed the Ambassador to the FSM and congratulated him for his successful accreditation as the Ambassador of Turkey to the FSM.  Acknowledging Turkey as a major player, not only in the Middle East, but internationally as well, the President affirmed his desire for the strengthening of relations between the two countries.  He also acknowledged Turkey’s continuing effort to enhance engagement with the Pacific Islands Forum countries, through such mechanism as the Turkey-PIFS Forum Ministerial Meeting, the recent of which was held in Turkey in June of this year.  Sentiments of appreciation for assistance provided by Turkey were conveyed as well.  more>>

New Post Office opens in Kosrae

Leaders from the National Government and Kosrae State Government along with Kosrae church leaders, municipal mayors, and its people gathered at Tofol on Friday October 10, 2014 to witness the opening ceremony of the new Post Office which took place at 10am. The ceremony began with the state anthem and the raising of the colors by the Kosrae State police officers followed by an invocation by Reverend Solomon Mongkeya.

In her opening remarks, Postmaster General, Ginger Porter Mida, thanked the ALMIGHTY FATHER in Heaven for his love and guidance for the special day and His blessings in making the work of building a new post office for the people of Kosrae. She also thanked the Kosrae State Government for providing the land property purposely for the Post Office. She thanked President Manny Mori for his support in building the postal facility and the FSM Congress for funding the project as well.   more>>

FSM Defends Additional Continental Shelf Claim

New York – August 29, 2014.  On August 25, 2014, the Delegations from Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, and Solomon Islands began meeting with the 6-man Sub-Commission in the United Nations that examines the Ontong Java Plateau Submission in which the Federated States of Micronesia claims additional continental shelf over what is known as the Ontong Java Plateau south of Kapingamarangi Island.  The joint claim made before the United Nations Commission on the Limits of Continental Shelf (UNCLCS) in New York potentially increases the national territory of the submitting countries by more than 500,000 square kilometers, and FSM shall have the ability to extend its continental shelf further out into the high seas.  The joint submission is made in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which sets out the internationally-accepted formula for delineating the outer limits of continental shelf beyond the normal EEZ.  The continental shelf could hold precious minerals and rare metals that will benefit future generation of FSM citizens. more>>

FSM Supreme Court announces the passing away of Chief Justice Yinug

It is with great sadness and a profound sense of loss that the Supreme Court of the Federated States of Micronesia announces that the Honorable Martin G. Yinug, Chief Justice of the FSM Supreme Court, passed away late Sunday afternoon, August 31, 2014, in his home State of Yap.


The remains of CJ Yinug is currently in Yap State. Further details regarding the arrangements for the state funeral and the burial will be released as they become available. We ask that you keep the family of the late Chief Justice Yinug in your Prayers and thoughts.

FSM Leadership Endorsed the Outcome of the 2014 FSM Health Summit

A new milestone for the health sector in the FSM was reached on August 20, 2014 when the FSM Leadership endorsed the recommendations from the 2014 Health Summit.  The 2014 Health Summit was attended by about 200 participants from all sectors in the FSM, key stakeholders and partners.

The first two days of the Summit (August 18-19) were dedicated to technical discussions and presentations focusing on key health areas.  At the end of the second day, the technical groups presented the outcomes of their discussions and were framed into recommendation for the Leadership to endorse. more>>

World Bank Grant under IDA 17 funding Estimated at 50 million USD for FSM Fiber Optic Projects

Members of the World Bank Field team for the FSM fiber optic connectivity projects visited Pohnpei  and met with national government officials, FSMTC, and the FSM ICT Project Taskforce, headed by Secretary Francis Itimai of the Department of Transportation, Communication, and Infrastructure. The objectives of the visit were to consult with officials and key stakeholders and to work with the Taskforce to finalize the project plans and related documentation for consideration by the World Bank board for a project that will bring the maximum fiber connectivity in the FSM under grant funds under IDA 17 funding, which has been estimated at 50 million dollars. more>>

On August 25, 2014, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) President Manny Mori received Mr. Julio Camarena-Villasenor who presented his Letters of Credence from President Enrique Pena Nieto accrediting him as Ambassador of the United Mexican States to the FSM.

President Mori welcomed Ambassador Camarena-Villasenor to the FSM and expressed his appreciation for the shared interest in keeping a strong relationship between the FSM and the Mexican States.

Ambassador Camarena-Villasenor thanked President Mori for accepting him and expressed his country’s readiness to connect FSM and Mexico together in diverse ways that will further solidify diplomatic ties between the two nations. 

Among an array of interests discussed, the Ambassador highlighted Mexico’s willingness to waive visa requirements for FSM citizens traveling to Mexico as a way of deepening interactions. President Mori welcomed this prospect and said the FSM should reciprocate this offer.  

The two officials also touched upon Mexico’s experience of economic success with the Ambassador sharing insights on his country’s interest in boosting air transportation services to the Asian region through Micronesia to maintain strengths in its tourism sector.   more>>

 The Forty-Fifth Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting concluded in Koror, Republic of Palau on July 31st, 2014. The meeting was attended by the Federated States of Micronesia President Manny Mori and other Heads of State and Government from the Republic of Kiribati, the Republic of Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu.

Australia was represented by its Deputy Prime Minister while New Zealand and the Republic of Vanuatu were represented by their respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs. The Cook Islands Minister of Finance represented his country.

 This morning, the Federated States of Micronesia and the United States signed a treaty that clarifies maritime boundary between the two countries.

Signing the treaty on behalf of the FSM was the Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin Robert. The United States was represented by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Dennise Mathieu.


During the ceremony, Secretary Robert expressed gratitude to the Forum Secretariat and President of Palau for allowing the ceremony to take place during the meeting. He also said, " I take the honor as my high duty to represent President Mori and the FSM Government at this ceremony.

 On Monday, July 28, Federated State of Micronesia President Manny Mori held a meeting with representatives of the Russian Federation at the Palau Pacific Resort in Koror, Palau.

The meeting was President Mori's first official encounter with Russia, facilitated by the occasion of the 45th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) being held in Palau. The Russian officials have taken the opportunity to engage with Pacific countries as an invited country in the Post-Forum Dialogue between PIF Member States and their respective country and agency development partners, which will be held on Friday, August 1st.
