Repatriation of Nepalese and Indian Nationals from the FSM

9 August 2016 - National Police Force Officers escorted five Nepalese to their country of origin on 1 August 2016.  Two Indonesian nationals for destinations in Australia and United States orgininally claimed to seek refuge in Hawaii, entered Yap harbor on 18 November 2014 to seek aid.

Since arrival of the “green boat” with the 36 undocumented persons in the FSM in November 2014, the Government had been in contact with authorities of Nepal and India to arrange repatriation of these foreign nationals to their country of origin.  The captain of the “green boat” had been jailed, tried, and convicted of entering the FSM jurisdiction illegally in violation of immigration laws and human smuggling. Under negotiated agreement with Jakarta, the two Indonesian nationals were returned to Indonesia.  In June 2016, 7 Nepalese were repatriated to Nepal. more>>

As the Chairman of the National Trade Facilitation Committee (NTFC), Vice President of the FSM, the Honorable Yosiwo P. George, is convening the 9th NTFC Meeting from 11-12 August 2016, at the Central Facility, Palikir, Pohnpei. The main purpose of this meeting is to bring participants and all stakeholders from the National Government and the FSM States together to prepare and discuss negotiation positions and offers for the upcoming final round of negotiations of the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations (PACER) Plus.

New York, 28 July 2016. – The Joint Delegation of the Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands made a final presentation to the Subcommission (SC) established by the Commission on the Limits of Continental Shelf in March 2014 to examine the joint submission on the Ontong Java Plateau (OJP) continental shelf.  The final presentation concludes a major undertaking by the three states in the review of their joint submission before the Subcommission. more>>


United Nations Pacific Strategy Consultation - Joint Priorities for United Nations Support in FSM for 2018 – 2022.

On July 26, 2016 a “United Nations Pacific Strategy Consultation (UNPS) was held at the Governor’s Conference Room in Pohnpei State.  The purpose of the consultation is for the UN to work closely with the FSM in support of FSM’s implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).

The SDG’s are a set of 17 agreed goals by UN member states which targets Food Security, Good Health & Quality Education, Economic Growth, Climate Action, Partnership for the Goals among others. 

The consultation included participants from the FSM National Government, Pohnpei State Government, NGO’s, Civil Societies, Private Sectors, and Donor partners with the UN Resident Coordinator for the Pacific, Ms. Osnat Lubrani and her staff. more>>


Annual Maritime Security Cooperation Talks between FSM and Australia

On Tuesday, July 19, 2016, representatives from the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia and the Government of Australian held their bilateral
Annual Maritime Surveillance Talks (MSC) at the OEEM Conference room in Palikir. The objective of the annual meeting is to strengthen and deepen the bilateral security relationship between the two countries and to provide an opportunity to exchange views on a range of shared security challenges affecting the region. In his welcoming remarks, Secretary Lorin S. Robert of the Department of Foreign Affairs welcomed the Australian Delegation headed by Ambassador George Fraser who was accompanied by Assistant Secretary Jenny Da Rin from the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade along with their respective key staff on maritime security matters. Secretary Robert reiterated the FSM’s appreciation to Australian Government for its continued commitments in supporting FSM’s maritime surveillance capacity. more>>

The Federated States of Micronesia will now be sending five athletes to this year’s Olympic Games competing in Swimming and Athletics (Track and Field) and just announced in Boxing.  The Olympic Games are from August 5 to August 21, 2016 in Rio, Brazil.  Late June, the FSM National Olympic Committee (FSMNOC) and FSM Boxing Association were notified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Boxing Association (IABA) that Jennifer Chieng, FSM female Boxer from Yap State, received a late Tripartite Commission invitation to compete in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in the Female 57-60kg division in Boxing.  This is outstanding news for the development of Boxing in the FSM, and is a great honor for Chieng.  She has been training in New York the past few months.  Her coach is Erick Divinagracia from Pohnpei State. more>>
