Archbishop Krebs presents credentials to President Mori as Apostolic Nuncio to the FSM

On July 11, FSM President Manny Mori received credentials from Archbishop Martin Krebs at the President's Office, accrediting the Archbishop as the Apostolic Nuncio of Pope Francis and the Holy See to the Federated States of Micronesia.

President Mori welcomed Archbishop Krebs in his capacity as the Vatican's "Ambassador" in the FSM and expressed his appreciation to Pope Francis for concluding the appointment, an indication of the strong ties between the Holy See and the FSM.

In addition, President Mori took the opportunity to express appreciation to the Pope in recognition of the tremendous support the Catholic Church in Micronesia has played over the years in various socio-economic development ministries and engagements, especial in the areas of education, health and social justice.

Archbishop Krebs extended greetings from the Pope and thanked President Mori for the warm welcome and reception extended to him by the FSM Government upon his arrival. more>>

June 24, 2014. Last week Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin Robert and Director of NORMA Patrick McKenzie participated in two key events in Washington, DC related to oceans and the Pacific community, along with Ambassador Asterio Takesy and a number of ministers from around the world.  The first was the international conference “Our Ocean” that was convened by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at the beginning of the week, and the second was the Pacific Day celebration hosted by the Embassy of New Zealand on Wednesday evening.

Pacific Day is an annual tradition of the diplomatic community in Washington, DC, featuring food and dance of Pacific countries and discussions pertaining to key issues. Because of the timing of Secretary Kerry’s meeting, many Pacific leaders also attended Pacific Day this year, including Secretary Robert, Palauan President Tommy Remengesau, RMI Minister of Foreign Affairs Tony DeBrum, and FFA Director-General James Movick, all of whom delivered remarks during the Seminar associated with the event.  Secretary Kerry and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key also addressed the gathering later.

It is one of many that the Department of H&SA is taking toward promoting Healthy Lifestyle and at the same time protecting the welfare and maintaining high morale for department staff.

Japan Ambassador Sakai takes up post in the Federated States of Micronesia

At the Nation’s capitol, a newly appointed Japan Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia, H.E. Masaki Sakai, presented the letter of recall for his predecessor and his letter of credence to President Manny Mori on Friday, May 30th at the President's Office.

President Mori welcomed Ambassador Sakai and congratulated him on his new assignment. He noted that the Ambassador has a strong background in fisheries and agriculture.

On this occasion, President Mori also stated his appreciation for the many support the Government of Japan has extended to the FSM in infrastructure improvement as well as other expert and technical assistants in the field of health, education, fisheries, and other. He also mentioned the "Kizuna" program as a vital element in the long relationship the counties have cherished, which got formalized in the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1988. more>>

Today, the Federated States of Micronesia President Manny Mori presented his last State of the Nation address before the 18th Congress of the FSM.  Quoting from the Preamble of the FSM Constitution, the President stated “Micronesia began in the days when man explored seas in rafts and canoes.  The Micronesian nation is born in an age when men voyage among the stars; our world itself is an island”. Referring to the spirit of the FSM Constitutional Preamble, President Mori reflected on his presidency and the state of the FSM.

In setting out where we were, President Mori recalled his words to the nation during his first inaugural address stating, “we hope that after we leave office, we will have left behind a better foundation for those who follow.”  The President acknowledged that both he and the Vice President had done their best to achieve the goals of his administration. He also indicated that not all the goals were yet achieved. However, he said during his remaining one year, he would continue to tackle the nation’s most difficult challenges, including preparing the FSM for the expiration of the financial assistance under the Amended Compact of Free Association with the United States in 2023. more>>

The Seventh State and National Leadership Conference (SNLC) took place on May 22nd and 23rd at the College of Micronesia- FSM, Palikir, Pohnpei.  During the two-day conference, the SNLC Principals discussed critical issues for the economic and social development of the FSM including: 2023 Framework and Action Plan, lowering threshold of the constitutional amendment, tax system reform, project management unit, fiber optic connectivity, FSM Petroleum projects on renewable energy, air service cooperation, infrastructure development, and overseas development assistance.

In response to the directives of the Chief Executive Counsel Communiqué of 2008 and FACSSO Resolution No. 13-1 of 2013 which aim at meeting Strategic Goal No. 3 of the Nation’s Strategic Development Plan (SDP), the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Education has been developing Career Guidance and Counseling materials for the high schools in the FSM.  

In addition to a series of activities regarding development of career and technical education in the nation and development of guidance and counseling materials, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Training of Trainers Workshop was conducted at the National Special Education Office in Kolonia on May 19-23, 2014.

The meeting was held at the conference room of the Office of Environment and Emergency Management (OEEM) at the Capital complex in Palikir and was attended by high-level officials from both Governments. FSM Ambassador to the United States His Excellency Asterio Takesy, and the Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Pohnpei, Miguel Ordonez, headed the respective delegations.

Two days after the opening of the Fourth Regular Session of the 18th Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Congressional Special Committee (Committee to Wait of the President) met with President Manny Mori this morning at the President's Conference Room.


The Committee consisted of Senator Joseph J. Urusemal, Senator Yosiwo P. George and Senator David W. Panuelo, who said he was a last minute appointment. Senator Panuelo, who chaired the Committee, took the place of Senator Peter M. Christian. Senator Wesley W. Simina, also appointed to the Committee, did not attend the meeting.  more>>

FSM and Singapore open air space to one another

On April 28, 2014 at 2:00 pm, a historic event took place when the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Singapore signed an Air Service Agreement (ASA), enabling airlines of each country to freely fly in each other's air space.

Signing on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Singapore is Minister of Transport’s Lui Tuck Yew and on behalf of the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia is Secretary Francis Itimai, Department of Transportation, Communications & Infrastructure.

The ASA was first proposed by FSM to Singapore in February of 2013 and months ensued with negotiations between the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and FSM Department of TC&I. On February 2014 the agreement finally took shape and amicably agreed to by both sides. more>>

His Excellency Ratu Epelei Nailatkau, President of the Republic of Fiji, made his first official visit to the FSM on April 17-19, 2014 as a part of President Nailtikau’s tour to the Pacific Island Countries (PICs) to convey Fiji’s appreciation during this transitional period in the shaping of Fiji’s New Constitution and to reaffirm Fiji’s pledge towards building closer ties with its Pacific neighbors.  The President has already made official visits to Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste.  He recently visited the Republic of Palau, Guam and the Republic of Marshal Islands. more>>    

2023 Planning Committee Consults with Chuuk State Private Sector and Government Leaders

The 2023 Planning Committee held its second round of consultations in Chuuk State on April 21 as part of the second round of consultations in all FSM States in April and May, with emphasis on growing the economy.

The Committee was led by FSM President Manny Mori and accompanied by Governor Johnson Elimo from Chuuk, Governor Sebastian Anefal from Yap, and representatives for Governors John Ehsa of Pohnpei and Lyndon Jackson of Kosrae.

On Tuesday of April 15, 2014 at 10:00am, H.E. President Emanuel Mori received the Letter of Credence of H.E. Roland Van Remoortele as the first Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium accredited to the Federated States of Micronesia in an official ceremony at the President’s Conference room in Palikir, Pohnpei. In attendance of the ceremony were Vice-President Alik L. Alik, Secretary Kensley Ikosia, Deputy Secretary Samson E. Pretrick and staff from the office of the President and the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Saipan-based GPPC to complete Weno Road project for a total of $7.7 million

On April 9, 2014, the FSM PMU Contracting Officer awarded the completion of the Weno Road project to Saipan-based contractor, GPPC, Inc., thereby ending the speculation that Pacific International Inc. (PII) will be reinstated to complete the contract work. The FSM Government’s announcement follows the determination by the Surety, Century Insurance Company (CIC), that it would not honor its legal obligations under the bond. CIC had issued the Payment and Performance Bond for the Weno Road project which is contract insurance to the Government in the event of contractor default and obligates the Surety to fund the balance of the contract. In order to move forward and complete the project for the people of Chuuk State, the US Department of Interior, Office of Insular Affairs, has been requested to reinstate the project funding and also issue the additional grant funds necessary for completion.

The Annual General Meeting for JICA Alumni Association of the FSM (JAA-FSM) to celebrate the 7th Anniversary of the establishment of the association took place on March 27, 2014, at Mangrove Bay.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Ihlen Joseph-Iso Naniken of Uh, Honorable Lorin Robert -Secretary of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Eiichi Suzuki-Ambassador of Japan to the FSM, JICA Resident Representative, and Mr. Moses Prestrick-JAA-FSM President, in addition to board of directors and ex-participants of JICA trainings.

In his opening address, Mr. Kaoru Iwasaki-Resident Representative of JICA, stated that he is pleased to see the JAA executives from each of the four FSM States present at the meeting-an indication of the success in the establishment of JAA-FSM which would contribute to the advancement of bilateral ties between Japan and FSM. more>>

FSMIS (April 4, 201): The Kosrae State Fair kicked off its annual event on the 27th and 28th of March 2014 at Kosrae High School and the Kosrae Gymnasium with the purpose of advancing the role of trade and investment and cultural awareness. The theme of the fair entitled, “Tuhkeni Pahtok Kasrpacn Acn Sesr Ac Oiyac Mahtuh” roughly translates as, “Help sustain the resources and good tradition of our island”, which exemplifies important components of development, preservation and sustainability. According to State officials, the state fair has been held annually for more than a decade.

The two-day fair that aimed to promote productivity, food security and cultural vibrancy has turned into an iconic event. With their government officials, traditional chiefs and distinguished guests, communities gathered to celebrate their highly regarded event. In opening the celebration, Lieutenant  Governor Carson Sigrah conveyed his gratitude to all and highlighted his and the Government of Kosrae's appreciation to the President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) for the FSM's support of the annual event. In addition to taking innovative steps, Lt. Governor Sigrah joined others in recognizing that long-term effects is crucial to strengthening the state’s economic development.

 On March 15-17, 2014, the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme-FSM (GEF SGP) convened its annual country level National Steering Committee (NSC) meeting at the College of Micronesia-FSM Kosrae State Campus Small Business Development Center conference room.  The two days meeting marked the first meeting of the Programme held in Kosrae State.  The meeting reaffirmed the Programme’s commitment to continue and enhance its grant making support to all FSM NGOs, and Community-Based Organizations to access the available GEF resources within the country.  Through funding allocations from the GEF, the SGP FSM Programme committed to an ambitious goal to grant $1.1 million USD in 2014 to provide support to community driven projects that directly mitigate threats to the FSM environment and support community empowerment and sustainable livelihoods development.   more>>

The Honorable Dennis K. Yamase, Senior Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Federated States of Micronesia, has officially submitted his resignation to be effective April 18, 2014.  The main reason for his leaving is to help in the care of his elderly parents in Hawaii. more>>
