Outgoing Belgian Ambassador pays farewell visit to FSM

On March 9th, 2017, President Peter M. Christian received a visit by His Excellency Roland Van Remoortele of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Federated States of Micronesia. The purpose of Ambassador Van Remoortele’s visit was to formally bid his farewell as the outgoing Belgian non-resident Ambassador to the FSM and also to witness the ceremony of the Presentation of Exequatur to the first-ever Honorary Consul of Belgium in the FSM, Mrs. Yvonne J. Adams-Hawkins. Based in Manila, Ambassador Van Remoortele became the first Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to the FSM when he presented his credentials in April 2014, since the establishment of Diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1996. He will be succeeded by Mr. Michel Goffin.

During the courtesy call, President Christian welcomed Ambassador Van Remoortele back to FSM and thanked him for the visit. He expressed his appreciation for the formalization of an Honorary Consul of Belgium in FSM and confirmed that such representation supports mutual efforts to deepen cooperation and dialogue between the two countries. Discussions on possible areas of cooperation were made, mainly in the areas of agriculture, aquaculture and health sector. For the latter sector, the possibility of utilizing retired and experienced doctors from Belgium to the FSM, was briefly mentioned. Climate change and energy issues were discussed as areas of great importance towards the development of FSM.

Ambassador Van Remoortele also paid courtesy call on Secretary Lorin S. Robert of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Governor Marcelo K. Peterson of Pohnpei State, as well as the Diplomatic Corps in the FSM. He was accompanied by his wife Ms. Sylvia Tay and they departed Pohnpei on Tuesday, March 14, 2017.
