Grant Aid of 80 Million RMB to the FSM

Palikir, Pohnpei (Department of Foreign Affairs): 
An Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation was signed between Secretary Lorin S. Robert and Ambassador Li Jie, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China on behalf their respective governments on December 13, 2016 at the President’s Conference Room. The grant aid of RMB 80 million is by far the biggest of its kind to the FSM. Pursuant to the agreement, the grant aid shall be used for transport sector project(s) and other project(s) to be agreed upon between the two Governments.

In a short remark after the signing, Ambassador Li conveyed that the grant aid was timely given the spirit of the holiday season as a gift from the Chinese Government to the FSM. He further touched on the special relations between FSM and China and further stated that the grant is part of his ongoing efforts to push Beijing to increase its assistance to the FSM. He further stated that he will continue to push his Government to make sure that the next assistance to the FSM will be no less that 80 million RMB.

Secretary Robert responded by thanking Ambassador Li and expressed his appreciation for the generous assistance to the FSM on behalf of both of President Christian and Vice President George who were witnessing the signing of the agreement ceremony. He continued by assuring Ambassador Li that the grant assistance will not only assisted FSM in its ongoing nation building efforts but will certainly enhance the good working relations between FSM and China.
