Vice-President Alik Attends US July 4th Celebration

On Wednesday July 04th 2012, Vice-President Alik L. Alik represented the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia in the celebration of the 236th Anniversary of Independence of the United States of America. The celebration was held at the U.S. Embassy compound in Nett, Pohnpei State.

Delivering his statement on behalf of the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia, Vice-President Alik described the importance of July 4th in the history of the United States of America. He indicated that after 236 years of the existence of the Government of the United States of America all Americans have much to celebrate and be thankful for. Vice-President Alik also mentioned the historical relationship between the people of the Federated States of Micronesia and the people of the United States of America, which had existed long before the formalization of political relations, as described in the Compact of Free- Association Treaty. He conveyed sentiments of appreciation to those Americans who have made the FSM their permanent homes.

He also welcomed newest members of our American community, namely the newly-arrived Peace Corp Volunteers, and members of the US ROTC Cadets program.

Vice-President Alik concluded his statement by conveying best wishes to Ambassador Prahar and Mrs. Prahar, Deputy Chief of Mission Lori Dando, and Economic/Consular Officer David Reynolds, all of which are ending their tour of duty here in the FSM.

Other local dignitaries present in the celebration included Acting Secretary of Foreign Affairs Samson E. Pretrick, Lieutenant Governor of Pohnpei State Marcelo Peterson, and various members of Pohnpei State legislature. Members of the FSM Veterans Association were also present in the ceremony.
