International Domestic Violence Prevention Day in FSM Press Release #1109-27 On Wednesday, November 25th, 2009, the FSM will observe an International Domestic Violence Prevention Day. The theme for this year’s observation is “FSM Homes Free of Domestic Violence”. President Mori has signed a proclamation urging all residents of the FSM, both citizens and non-citizens alike, to observe and raise the social awareness of this issue and to prevent the proliferation of violence against women. In the proclamation, President Mori notes that over 30 years ago, the United Nations initiated a global awareness campaign towards preventing domestic violence directed against women and the FSM, as a member nation, has always been in support of this initiative as an expression of its fundamental value. He states that in the FSM, there is an “unmistakable recognition of the indispensable role of women in our society and in individual families” and this day is set aside to recognize the crucial role played by women in modern society. All four FSM States will be hosting educational programs on domestic violence and the FSM National Police will be wearing white ribbons as part of their support for “White Ribbon Day” the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. As Ms. Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said, “All segments of society must unite for the dignity and well-being of women and girls. Now is the time to build a society based on respect for fundamental human rights and the equal rights of men and women.” |
