FSM holds second Joint Strategy Meeting (JSM) with UN Agencies Press Release #1109-25 (FSM Department of Foreign Affairs, Palikir, Pohnpei: November 17, 2009) – A Joint Strategy Meeting (JSM) was held at the Yvonne’s Hotel Conference Room on Tuesday, 17 November 2009 between officials from FSM and officials from the United Nations. The visiting UN Mission included staff of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The main objective of the meeting was to review current activities of UN agencies in the FSM. Officials from the State of Pohnpei and non-governmental organizations (NGO) also participated at the JSM meeting. Discussions evolved around the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), which is the umbrella UN assistance framework for the Pacific. The visiting UN Mission, led by Mr. Okean Ehmes, Country Development Manager (CDM) at the United Nations Joint-Presence Office, presented updates on UN activities in the FSM in various areas relating to poverty reduction and equitable economic growth, good governance and human rights, equitable social and protection services, and sustainable environmental management. Some suggestions were put forth during the meeting including the proposed idea of having a joint-programming for UN agencies in country. The effort is to streamline activities and improve reporting obligations. In order to improve efficiency of UN programs, some organizational structures were also put on the table for consideration. In her closing remarks at the meeting, the Honorable Vita Skilling, Secretary of Health and Social Affairs, commended the UN agencies on their efforts and expressed appreciation for holding the meeting. She felt the meeting was important for many of the participants so that people can be more aware of the programs that the UN is undertaking in the FSM. |
