Since 2004, FSM along with the rest of the Pacific island Countries were participating to establish each countries pilot project proposals with the IWRM (Integrated Water Resource Management) Approaches. Since the development, all the countries undergo the requirements to develop the proposals from the Diagnostic Report, Hot spot Analysis to the demonstration proposal.

With the funding endowment by the UN GEF (United Nation Global Environmental Facilities) for all the Pacific countries to exploit in the IWRM approaches. The FSM initial IWRM take the process of Ridge to Reef methodology.

The overall objective of the project is to achieve a sustainable Integrated Water and Waste Water Management in the Federated States of Micronesia. The project is intended specifically to demonstrate improvement of drinking water quality and significant reduction in pollutants entering the fresh and marine water around Pohnpei and Chuuk States.
