President Christian joins fellow International Leaders for Paris Agreement signing ceremony

On Friday April 22, 2016, President Peter M. Christian participated in the High-level Signature Ceremony for the Paris Agreement at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.  During the Ceremony, President Christian joined representatives from 174 other countries in signing the Agreement, marking the largest number of countries ever to sign an international instrument in a single day.  The Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted the Agreement in Paris last December.  more>>

On April 8, 2016, President Peter M. Christian issued a Commission in a ceremony for Mr. Tony A. deBrum formally appointing him
as an Honorary Consul of the Federated States of Micronesia in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.  This marks the first time that the FSM Government has established an Honorary Consulate in the Marshall Islands.

During the ceremony, President Christian thanked Mr. de Brum for accepting his appointment, and looked forward to working with him and the government of the Marshall Islands in strengthening the relationship between the two countries.  more>>

On April 5, 2016, President Peter M. Christian received Ambassador Paul Maddison of Canada in a Presentation of Credential (POC) ceremony held in his conference room at the Capital in Palikir, Pohnpei. The brief official ceremony accredited the Ambassador as the new Canadian Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia based in Canberra, Australia. Attending the ceremony were Vice-President Yosiwo George, Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs Samson Pretrick, and other staff from the Office of the President and Department of Foreign Affairs.
Following the ceremony, Ambassador Maddison paid a courtesy call on President Christian during  which some issues of interests were discussed such as airline service, climate change, fisheries, and scholarship opportunities, to name a few.  more>>

On Thursday April 7, 2016, in a brief ceremony held at the national complex in Palikir, President Peter M. Christian received the Letter of Credence for Ambassador Igor Khovaev, accrediting him as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), with residence in Manila, Republic of the Philippines.

Following the brief ceremony, Ambassador Khovaev had an opportunity to pay a courtesy call on President Christian during which several issues of mutual interests were discussed, which among others, includes air transportation, climate change, scholarship opportunities and tourism; the latter of which was discussed with special interest considering Russia’s immense portfolio in this sector.  more>>

Micronesia Conservation Trust Commends Micronesian Governments for Taking Steps to Promote Regional Enforcement of Shark Laws

Nine governments across Micronesia convened from April 6-7, 2016 at a workshop in Palikir, Federated States of Micronesia to discuss how to work collaboratively to ensure effective enforcement of the Micronesia Regional Shark Sanctuary and discuss the larger fisheries management challenges, including Illegal unreported and unregulated vessels.

The Pacific island jurisdictions of Palau, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and its four States of Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Territory of Guam attended the workshop hosted by the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia, with support from the Micronesia Conservation Trust and The Pew Charitable Trusts. more>>

March 17, 2016:  President Christian received a visit from Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Li Jie.  The Ambassador paid a courtesy call on President Christian to inform him of the forthcoming Chinese assistance to relief efforts currently underway in response to drought conditions resulting from El Nino.  These drought conditions were the subject of previous discussions between the President and the Ambassador, wherein the President welcomed any assistance that the PRC might be able to provide.  more>>

During the ceremony, President Christian, who administered the oath of office expressed his congratulatory remarks by noting his confidence in DCM Mori’s abilities and experience as he takes on his new role in Tokyo, Japan. President Christian acknowledged the contributions he has made to the National Government over the years and believes that through his enthusiasm and willingness, DCM Mori will contribute to further develop friendly ties that exist between FSM and Japan.

President Peter M. Christian led the FSM delegation to Koror, Republic of Palau, for the 16th Micronesian Presidents’ Summit (MPS) which convened on Monday, February 22, 2016. This marked the 16th year of the MPS for the Presidents of the Republic of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.  The annual meeting seeks to reaffirm and recommit to the strong ties and relations that have historically existed between the three Micronesian countries.  It also provides a valuable opportunity for the three Presidents to discuss, share, and address issues of national, regional, and international interest.

In his opening remarks, President Christian joined President Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. of the Republic of Palau in congratulating and welcoming newly elected President Hilda C. Heine of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to her first MPS. Among other issues discussed in the Summit, President Christian highlighted the need for continued cooperation and harmonization of the countries’ Immigration and Labor Laws.  more>>

The Honorable Vice-President Yosiwo P. George participated at the Turn-Over Ceremony of the Okat Bridge in the State of Kosrae, which was held in the morning of January 21, 2015.  The new Okat Bridge is funded by the government of the People’s Republic of China to replace the old bridge in Okat.  The Okat Bridge project is one of the largest projects and the first of its kind, ever donated to the Federated States of Micronesia by the Government of the People’s Republic of China and another largest project ever donated to Kosrae by the Chinese Government.  The Kosrae High School project that was built six years ago, is another important project resulting from the China-FSM Cooperation. The new Okat Bridge project was constructed by a Chinese company, Scichuan Road and Bridge Group Cooperation Company and started back in October 2014. more>>

Mr. Makir Max Keller was re-elected by the voters of Pingelap, and has served as Mayor for the past three terms.

After Mayor Keller took the oath of office, administered by The Honorable Nickontro W. Johnny, Associate Justice of Pohnpei State Supreme Court, President Christian congratulated Mayor Keller for his achievements and also extended his congratulatory remarks to the people of Pingelap for celebrating the inauguration of a new term for their Mayor.

Transshipment in Kosrae Takes Shape

On the morning of November 23, 2015, activity and work sparked the Kosrae port with the revamped transshipment facility being operated by Luen Thai Fishing Venture (LTFV).  Chief of Research Mr. Naiten Bradley Phillip Jr. and Port Sampler Mr. Truman Jano from the National Oceanic Resource Management Authority (NORMA) was on hand to monitor and train Kosraen based fisheries observers on port sampling duties.  NORMA port sampling monitors the vessels catch and verifies what is unloaded. Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) oceanic division scientist collects the data, to provide analysis of catch reports for NORMA to manage its marine resources effectively to achieve economic-growth for the Nation. more>>

In welcoming Mr. Naoki Kitahara, President of ABLE Overseas Reinsurance and his delegation, Vice President George opened dialogue by expressing appreciation for the afforded visit to do captive insurance business in the FSM. In light of development efforts through business expansion, the Captive Insurance regulations in FSM which are similar to that of Japan makes it more comfortable for companies to do business in the FSM.

President Peter M. Christian visited Japan to attend the celebration of the 29th FSM’s Independence Anniversary held on November 4th in Tokyo. During the visit, President held a meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at his official residence. This was his 3rd time to meet with Prime Minister Abe in 6 months period, after taking the Office of the President in May this year. At the meeting, both leaders discussed issues of mutual interest including fisheries, transportation and tourism developments, and reassured continued cooperation in strengthening the bilateral partnership. Accompanying the President to this meeting were Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin S. Robert, Senator David W. Panuelo, Chairman of Resources and Development Committee, and John Fritz FSM Ambassador to Japan. more>>

Micronesia backs Pacific push on preventing corruption

Since its accession to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption in 2012, the Federated States of Micronesia has been committed to the principles of the Convention, FSM Head of Delegation, Mr. Leonito Bacalando Jr told delegates at the Conference of State Parties (CoSP) in St Petersburg, Russian Federation this week. There are over 1500 participants in attendance from 164 countries.

“This commitment reverberates throughout the institutions and agencies of the Micronesian Government,” Mr Bacalando stated during his official plenary country speech. more>>

Jennifer Chieng, FSM female boxer, from Yap State, FSM was awarded the ANOC 2015 Pacific Games Female Athlete of the Year Award at the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) annual general assembly on Thursday, October 29th in Washington DC, USA. 

Chieng won a gold medal in Boxing at the recently concluded 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.  Her coach was Erick Divinagracia, President of the FSM Boxing Association.

Maria Christina Theresia Derckx, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Federated States of Micronesia, in an official ceremony held at the President’s conference. She is cross-accredited from Manila, Philippines.

In welcoming Ambassador Derckx, President Christian opened dialogue by congratulating the newly appointed Ambassador and noted the working relationship between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the FSM. more>>

George attended the State Funeral of the late former President Jurelang Zedkaia and a current senator of the Republican of the Marshall Islands on behalf of the people and government of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).  The late President Zedkaia holds the traditional Iroojlaplap from Majuro and served as President of the Marshall Islands from October 2009 to January 2012.  He also served as Speaker from 2008 to 2009.  The late President Zedkaia was called to his eternal rest on October 7, 2014 in the Marshall Islands. more>>

2015 - FSM President Peter Christian delivered remarks at the ‘Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment,’ a high-level event at the beginning of the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting, which was co-hosted by the People’s Republic of China and UN Women (the United Nations’ gender equality body), was part of the three-day High-Level Sustainable Development Summit at which the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted.

President Christian began his remarks by thanking the organizers of the event, President Xi Jinping of China and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Both President Xi and the Secretary-General announced their commitments to enhance gender parity, including China’s pledge to scale up financial and technical assistance to developing countries.

In the first half of his statement, President Christian reflected on the successes achieved under the Beijing Platform for Action and the Millennium Development Goals, but said countries must move forward without delay on the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. He called for leaders to commit to intensify efforts to reach the targeted development goals before their time.

New Direction and Leadership for the Micronesia Conservation Trust (MCT)!

The Micronesia Conservation Trust Board and management staff met in Guam at the Ernst & Young Office from September 23-25, 2015 to adopt a new 3 year (2016-2018) Strategic Action Plan for the organization and to organize its Board of Trustees. The organization, which was established in 2002 to support local, national and regional programs for biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and sustainable development for the people of Micronesia, adopted a new vision "Enduring partnerships that conserve our land and sea to improve quality of life for communities across Micronesia" and will focus on three main impact areas including Conservation, Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods.  Outgoing Board Chairman, Mr. Kembo Mida, Esq., stated "MCT strives to be a world class organization, that is truly Micronesia". This basically represents that the MCT Board and management work hard to meet the requirements of international donors in order to bring more financial and technical resources to the region, while maintaining its ability to prioritize and focus on the needs and aspirations of  local communities by making its programs highly accessible to them.  more>>
