President Christian Addresses 71st Session of United Nations General Assembly

September 21, 2016 (New York, New York) - Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) President Peter Christian delivered FSM’s national address before the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He focused on themes of global peace and security, reform and modernization of the UN, climate change, and oceans.

President Christian began his remarks by congratulating Peter Thomson, Permanent Representative of Fiji to the UN, on his election to the Presidency of the UNGA for the 71st session, calling it a historic occasion for Pacific islands. He next thanked the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is finishing his term this year, for being a champion of many issues important to Small Island Developing States (SIDS), such as increasing political momentum to address climate change. more>>

Visa-Waiver Agreement Signed Between FSM and European Union

(New York, New York) – The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin Robert signed an agreement with representatives of the European Union (EU) that enables short-term visa-free travel to Europe for FSM citizens under most circumstances.

The new visa-waiver agreement, which also provides for reciprocal treatment of European citizens who visit the FSM, was signed on the European side by both Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajčák (the current President of the Council of the European Union)
 and Dimitris Avramopoulos, the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship. The signing ceremony, hosted by the Slovak Mission to the United Nations, was also attended by FSM Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Jeem Lippwe and Second Secretary Martin Zvachula. more>>

Washington, DC, USA - President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) Peter Christian delivered remarks to a high-level audience during the first day of the 3rd Our Ocean conference, hosted by United States Secretary of State John Kerry. The purpose of the annual Our Ocean conference is to catalyze actions to protect our shared ocean resources and empower a new generation to lead the way toward a healthy and sustainable ocean.

The President was the first to speak on the panel entitled Global Ocean Leadership, which also included Mauritius Prime Minister Ameenah Gurib-Fakim and four Vice Presidents and Foreign Ministers. Last week in Palikir, Pohnpei, in the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) opened its 47th annual forum summit where leaders of sixteen (16) Pacific nations gathered to meet and discuss important issues for the region.  Also in attendance at this year’s Forum were Associated Members of the PIF, observers, representatives of Post-Forum Dialogue (PFD) partners, and heads of the Council of Regional Organizations for the Pacific (CROP agencies).  While this year’s theme, “Small and Far: Challenge for Growth”, is at the forefront of focus, leaders from Pacific countries reaffirmed their deep commitment to the framework for Pacific Regionalism as endorsed by leaders in 2014. more>>

The FSM Office of Environment and Emergency Management (OEEM) held a 5k Fun Walk on 17 September at Palm Terrace, to celebrate the 29th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol.  In joining the celebration, FSM Vice President Yosiwo George delivered the welcoming remarks at the event and expressed FSM’s commitment in taking a strong lead on the issue of reducing HFCs and acknowledged the extensive role the Nation has played in combating global warming and climate change. more>>

The Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Jane J. Chigiyal, signed on 9 September 2016, a joint communique establishing diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at a signing ceremony that took place at the UAE Permanent Mission.  Ambassador Chigiyal’s counterpart, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nation in New York, Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, signed the joint communique on behalf of her Government. more>>

FSM establishes Diplomatic Relations with the Government of Kuwait

The Government of the Federated States of Micronesia and the Government of Kuwait formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Kuwait to the United Nations in New York on 1 September 2016. The Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations, Ambassador Jane J. Chigiyal, and her Kuwaiti counterpart, Ambassador Mansour Ayyad Al-Otaibi, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two States. more>>

Repatriation of Nepalese and Indian Nationals from the FSM

9 August 2016 - National Police Force Officers escorted five Nepalese to their country of origin on 1 August 2016.  Two Indonesian nationals for destinations in Australia and United States orgininally claimed to seek refuge in Hawaii, entered Yap harbor on 18 November 2014 to seek aid.

Since arrival of the “green boat” with the 36 undocumented persons in the FSM in November 2014, the Government had been in contact with authorities of Nepal and India to arrange repatriation of these foreign nationals to their country of origin.  The captain of the “green boat” had been jailed, tried, and convicted of entering the FSM jurisdiction illegally in violation of immigration laws and human smuggling. Under negotiated agreement with Jakarta, the two Indonesian nationals were returned to Indonesia.  In June 2016, 7 Nepalese were repatriated to Nepal. more>>
